Interns, externs, and shadows FAQs

Are Interns, Externs and Shadows considered volunteers?

No. UTMC volunteers are processed through Volunteer Services. If you are seeking volunteer opportunities at UTMC, please visit the volunteer services webpage.

What is an Intern?

An intern is identified as a UT student who is participating in a department-approved clinical rotation or other learnership opportunity at UTMC or its associated clinics.

What is an Extern?

An extern is identified as a student with an affiliated educational institution who is participating in a department approved clinical rotation or other learnership opportunity at UTMC or its associated clinics.

What is a Shadow?

A shadow is an individual who is approved by the department in a ‘non-hands on’ capacity observership at UTMC or its associated clinics.

Does a Shadow have requirements like an Intern and Extern?

Yes. Although the processes vary, shadow opportunities are also only approved following the completion of specific requirements.

How long does the onboarding process take?

The process can take several weeks depending on if the student is an extern, intern, shadow or minor.

If I am a minor, can I still shadow?

Yes. Minors who are interested in a shadow experience must first complete the Minors on Campus requirements through the department that has agreed to host.
