National

The University of Toledo offers a Master of Arts Degree in Counselor Education with a Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration and a Master of Arts in Counselor Education with a School Counseling Concentration. Both are fully accredited by Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Passage of the NBCC National Counselor Examination (NCE) and/or the NBCC National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) is required for Professional Counselor licensure in some states. Educational requirements to sit for the NCE and NCMHCE may be established by state licensure boards and vary by state.

Note: Some states require candidates to possess a teaching license prior to applying for licensure as a School Counselor. Examination requirements may be established by state licensure boards and vary by state. Passage of the Praxis Requirements Professional School Counselor 5421, among others, is required in some states. Please check with the State Board for all non-academic requirements.

Direct Disclosure:
Students need to take four (4) electives in the areas of Psychopharmacology, Addictions Counseling, Crisis or Trauma Counseling, and Advanced Counseling Theories and Techniques. UToledo offers electives of Drugs and Mental Health Counseling, Substance Abuse Counseling, Crisis Intervention Counseling, and Advanced Theories of Counseling and Consultation to meet these requirements. Two of those electives can be included on a student’s plan of study to meet the 60-credit hour degree requirement. To meet California requirements students would need to take two additional electives in the above outlined areas (66 credit hours total).
