Competency at Completion

Teacher candidates from The University of Toledo demonstrate strong academic competency and the ability to teach effectively, fostering positive impacts on P-12 student learning and development. Their mastery of content and foundational pedagogical knowledge is reflected in the university’s successful pass rates on the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE). Each academic year (AY) captures OAE exam data from September 1 - August 31, reported by Pearson ResultsAnalyzer.

OAE Content Assessment Pass Rates for Teacher Licensure

The OAE Content Assessment is a standardized test designed to evaluate the subject-specific knowledge of individuals seeking teacher licensure in Ohio. These assessments ensure that educators have the necessary content expertise and instructional proficiency to teach in their designated subject areas. Each exam focuses on a particular subject, such as mathematics, science, social studies, or early childhood education.

The OAE Pedagogy Assessments evaluate a teacher candidate’s understanding of instructional strategies, classroom management, student development, and educational best practices. These assessments ensure that educators are equipped with the foundational knowledge needed to create effective learning environments.

edTPA Pass Rates for Teacher Licensure

The edTPA is a student-produced ePortfolio of teaching materials completed and submitted by Teacher Candidates during the student teaching internship.  The edTPA is a national performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system used by teacher preparation programs throughout the United States, and is associated with Pearson Education Inc.

The University of Toledo COE integrated external edTPA scoring (by Pearson) for Teacher Candidates during the Fall 2024 semester of the 23-24AY. Because a passing edTPA score can satisfy the pedagogical knowledge component of initial teacher licensure in Ohio, a shift in students completing the APK assessments for licensure may vary in the coming academic years.

Selection Criteria

The COE admits candidates into professional programs who have the ability to meet high academic standards. The College does not use a single measure to determine admission, but requires potential candidates to meet a variety of measures. Admitted candidates at the undergraduate and graduate levels represent a highly qualified pool of individuals. ACT scores rank above the 50th percentile and the average GPA at the time of admission and at completion is consistently above 3.0.
