Summer Teaching Assignment Process

Introduction

As directed by Articles 10.4 and 12.7 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for tenured and tenure-track (T/TT) faculty, and as directed by Articles 8.5 and 11.8 of the CBA for lecturers, the College of Engineering has developed this policy which describes how such summer teaching assignments are to be made so that T/TT faculty and lecturers are on equal footing with respect to such assignments prior to offering courses to visiting or part-time faculty. This policy has been utilized by all departments within the College of Engineering for summer teaching assignments starting with the Summer 2016 semester.

 Process

· Summer courses are first offered to T/TT faculty and lecturers at the same time.

· If multiple T/TT faculty and/or lecturers identify the same course, preference is given by experience teaching the same or similar courses.

· If multiple T/TT faculty and/or lecturers have equivalent experience with the same or similar courses, preference is given to the faculty by longest duration of their University of Toledo faculty appointment.

· Course assignments should be spread across faculty to maximize the number of T/TT faculty and lecturers that can teach summer courses. An individual faculty member should not be assigned multiple summer courses until all T/TT faculty and lecturers without summer courses have had the opportunity to decline a course that they are qualified to teach.

· Under no circumstances will preference be given to a full-time faculty member based on their status as T/TT faculty or as a lecturer.

· If no full-time faculty member comes forward to teach the course, visiting or part-time faculty will be identified.

· If a Summer course assigned to T/TT faculty or a lecturer is cancelled, then the T/TT faculty or lecturer have the right to bump visiting or part-time faculty from any courses to which they have been assigned.

· T/TT faculty and lecturers will receive 3 1/3% of their academic year (9 month) salary per credit hour of summer instruction. Visiting or part-time faculty will receive, $1,000 per credit hour.

· The maximum summer workload is six (6) credit hours or two (2) courses, whichever results in the greater compensation.
