Hans Schmalzried, Ph.D.

Dr. Schmalzried is Professor Emeritus of Public and Allied Health at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), where he previously served as Chair of the Department of Public and Allied Health. Following his retirement, he returned to BGSU as an adjunct professor and continues to teach at the university and in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at the University of Toledo (UT). Prior to his retirement, he also taught for Rush University.

Dr. Schmalzried’s research focused on applied public health administration, with broad interests in addressing local public health issues. His research has included three primary areas: (1) public health concerns associated with mega-dairies; (2) groundwater contamination; and (3) internet-based emergency and disaster communications.

Before entering academia, Dr. Schmalzried served as a health commissioner for 19 years in two Ohio county health districts: Fulton County and Henry County. He began his public health career with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA), where he worked for seven years as an environmental scientist and environmental engineer.

Dr. Schmalzried served four terms as a trustee and Secretary/Treasurer of the National Public Health Foundation (PHF) Board in Washington, DC. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Ohio Health Commissioners and as a trustee of the Henry County Hospital Board for eight years. In addition, he served as a member of the Toledo–Lucas County Board of Health, where he also worked as Special Assistant to the Health Commissioner.
