Dr. John M. Laux is serving as Interim Dean of the College of Health and Human Services for the 2026–2027 academic year. A tenured professor of counselor education, Dr. Laux has been part of The University of Toledo community for more than 25 years and has served in several leadership roles, including department chair, associate dean, and senior associate dean.

Dr. Laux earned a master’s degree in counseling from West Virginia University and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Akron. He is licensed in Ohio as a Professional Clinical Counselor with supervisory endorsement, a Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor-Clinical Supervisor, and a Psychologist.

His clinical and research interests include dual diagnosis, personality disorders, and personality assessment. Throughout his career, Dr. Laux has worked in a variety of treatment and community settings, including the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center, community mental health agencies, correctional institutions, inpatient treatment centers, and university counseling services. He also served as a Mental Health Technician for the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Ohio-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team.

A nationally recognized leader in counseling education, Dr. Laux is the immediate past editor of the Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling and serves on multiple editorial review boards. He has authored or co-authored 78 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to seven book chapters, and directed 39 dissertations.

A fifth-generation Northwest Ohioan and first-generation college student, Dr. Laux is committed to academic excellence, student success, and preparing graduates to positively impact the communities they serve.
