Departmental Honors

Honors in Anthropology

Qualified juniors and seniors may apply to work toward Departmental Honors in Anthropology:

Admission

To begin (an remain) on the Departmental Honors path a student need must have the following:

  • 3.3 minimum GPA in anthropology courses
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA
  • 12 hours completed work in anthropology
  • Qualification as an anthropology major

Requirements

A student must complete 9.0 hours of independent work in anthropology. Before graduation, the student must submit a completed undergraduate honors thesis. Additionally, a 3.3 minimum GPA in anthropology courses and 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA must be met. Students should discuss their special interests with faculty members or with the honors advisor, who will help identify an appropriate faculty member to guide the honors work.

Ideally a candidate will start their honors efforts three semesters prior to their expected graduation date, but this is not a requirement.

Honors in Sociology

Admission

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of 12 hours of sociology courses; and
  • Qualification as a sociology major

Requirements

A student must complete nine hours of independent work in sociology. During the final semester before graduation, the student must complete an honors paper. The honors topic and paper are to be developed in close conjunction with a faculty adviser. Students should discuss their special interests with faculty members or with the honors adviser, who will help identify an appropriate faculty member to guide the honors work.
