Elective Description/Requirements:
During this elective, the student will acquire the clinical skills to identify and
initiate appropriate management of patients with allergic disorders, asthma, and immunodeficiency.
Because of the high frequency of patients with these disorders in the general population,
this elective should be of considerable practical value to the student planning a
career in primary care (Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Practice) and select specialties
(e.g., Dermatology and Otolaryngology). Patient population is 50% adult, 50% pediatric.
Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks
Educational Course Objectives: Student should be able to do the following by the end of the rotation:
- Describe the clinical manifestations of common allergic/atopic conditions (Allergic rhinitis, Asthma, Atopic dermatitis, Food allergy). EPOs: MK1, MK2, MK3, MK4, MK5
- Prepare a comprehensive evaluation of new and follow-up patients with allergic disorders (Allergic rhinitis, anaphylaxis, Asthma, Atopic dermatitis, HAE). EPOs: PC-1, PC-2, PC-3, PC-4
- Interpret laboratory (including basic spirometry results, FeNO, and peak flow monitoring), procedural and diagnostic data as they relate to allergic diseases (Allergic rhinitis, anaphylaxis, Asthma, Atopic dermatitis, HAE). EPOs: PC-7
- Describe recommended treatments of allergic disorders and the evidence used to formulate treatment recommendations. Identify the patient who should be referred to a subspecialist. EPOs: MK-6, PC-8
- Recognize principles of allergen avoidance and environmental control measures. EPOs: MK-12, MK-15
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients, patients’ families, colleagues, and others with whom physicians must exchange information in carrying out their responsibilities. . This includes being able to educate patients on basic environmental controls for animals, dust mite, mold, and pollens, as well as the usual times of year of importance for exposure to each of these in this area. Prerequisites: Successful completion of third year required Pediatric clerkship.
