Elective Description/ Requirements: In the first two years of the medical school we teach a core anatomy knowledge of the different system which is limited in the scope and depth which may be sufficient for some medical specialties but not all. The purpose of the elective is to allow MS4 students to enhance their understanding both in the scope and depth of the different anatomical regions of their primary interest (different body regions, brain, spinal cord, and the different components of musculoskeletal system) as it pertains to their future interest in residency and practices. These elective places a special emphasis primarily, but not limited to, on surgical specialties, Radiology, Neurology and Emergency Medicine. Therefore, whenever tissue compliance permits, students will access body regions through surgical approaches and surgical incisions to expose internal structures of interest while preserving other structures in the vicinity rather than traditional dissection of removal of different layers to access deeper structure. Using surgical approaches in this elective enhance manual dexterity of the students, the level of comfort and confidence in performing these procedures on real human subject. Students will be encouraged to perform different surgical procedures they have seen during clerkship or read about in the text book or watched in videos whenever tissue compliance permit in cadaveric materials. Students enrolled in the elective will be required to identify their areas of interest based on the residency they are seeking and future practice, develop a work plan which entails their goals and objectives to be accomplished during the elective with consultation of the elective director. The expectations include approximately 4 hours of work per day in the anatomy laboratory. In addition, students are expected to read 2 hours daily scientific literatures or textbook chapters pertinent to what they do in the lab to supplement/fortify their laboratory work. Reading topics will be identified by the students in consultation with the elective director and reading summary will be presented to the elective director twice weekly where they are expected to ask questions, answer questions or posed with challenges. Students will receive at the beginning of the course an activity log template where they will keep accurate log of all daily activities in the lab and in their reading time, citing all the reading sources they used. The activity log book will be handed to the instructor by the completion of the elective time and will be considered as one of the criteria to determine students’ grades. Upon completions of the elective students will be required to submit narrative assessment on the elective experience and elective director and suggestion for improving the elective.
