Elective Description/Requirements:
Designed for students going into Primary Care or related specialty Will be exposed to common ears, nose, and throat problems, such as recurrent tonsillitis/adenoidectomy, otitis media/myringotomy and tube insertion, hearing loss/hearing aids, swallowing problems, hoarseness, dizziness, chronic ear disease, sinusitis/sinus surgery, head and neck cancer.  May work in Audiology and Speech Department. 

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Perform a surgical history and physical examination focusing on otolaryngology problems. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-1, MK-1, MK-4, PC-6, PBL-2)
  2. Manage patients with basic otolaryngology problems. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, MK-4)
  3. Interpret audiogram, tympanogram, and sinus CT. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-5, PC-6, PC-7)
  4. Assist in minor procedures and in the operating room. (EPOs: PC-5)
  5. Implement a treatment plan for common otolaryngology problems. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-6, PC-7)
  6. Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-6, PC-7)

Professionalism:  UT/COMLS students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Special Requirements: On call and other special requirements will be at the discretion of the preceptor and clerkship director.  The student will be required to be in the physician’s office during office hours each day unless otherwise specified by the preceptor.
