Elective Description/Requirements: This is a 4-week elective in Family Medicine with a strong emphasis on activity medicine as it relates to sports medicine. Students spend time in UTMC Sports Medicine Clinic, Family Medicine Clinic, Orthopedic Clinic with the option of private orthopedics office. Students will also spend time with sports-oriented physical therapists, athletic trainers, and exercise physiologists. Students may also attend high school and college athletic contests and community sporting events as they are available.
Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

- Perform basic preseason physical exam. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, PC-6)
- Describe basic assessment of activity related injuries. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6PC-6)
- Describe basic rehabilitation for common activity related injuries. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6)
- Develop basic exercise prescription for: (EPOs: PC-1)
- aerobic fitness
- weight loss
- strength training/body building
- disease specific modifications
- Explain basic concepts of sports performance enhancement for high school athletes. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4)
- Discuss the role of the family physician acting as team physician for high school and community athletes. (EPOs: SBP-1)
- Discuss modifications of exercise for geriatric and other special populations (gender, disease, physical and and mental challenged). (EPOs: SBP-4)
