Elective Description/Requirements: This course provides a focused opportunity for the senior student to study gastroenterology and hepatologic diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Length of Clerkship: 2 Weeks

Links to Core Competencies/Educational Course Objectives: At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to discuss the differential diagnosis of common gastroenterological/ hepatologic problems such as GI bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, jaundice, and hepatitis. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-1PC-6, PC-7)
  2. Propose an efficient course of evaluation of the differential and interpret the results of the evaluation. (EPOs: PC-6, PC-7)
  3. Show sensitivity to the patient’s concerns regarding the illness and also respect the role of the referring primary service in the patient’s care. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, IPC-3)
