Elective Description/Requirements:
Students will be integral members of the elective general surgery and breast care
surgery service caring for the general surgery and breast cancer surgical patients.
Students will work intimately with the Dr. Jessica Burns and residents assigned to
the service. Students will participate in the work up of both elective general surgery
and breast care patients from the preoperative assessment in the clinic to the operating
room followed by the post operative follow up in the clinic. Students will gain experience
in modern diagnosis and treatment of the breast care patient. Students will participate
in all aspects of patient management both in and outpatient, attend daily rounds and
participate in the operating room.
Length of Clerkship 2 weeks
Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:
- Independently perform a detailed history and physical exam in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and imaging studies. (EPOs: PC-5, MK-7, PC-1, IPC-1, IPC-2)
- Implement a plan and treatment options for the elective and bariatric patient. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-5)
- Perform basic OR skills including suturing, assisting with laparoscopic procedures, and wound care. (EPOs: PC-5)
- Interpret significant findings of laboratory and diagnostic studies to formulate a differential diagnosis. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1)
- Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1)
- Implement and discuss a discharge plan for the elective surgical patient (MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-5)
- Manage a patient pre and post operatively. (EPOs: PC-7, MK-1)
