Elective Description/ Requirements:
This elective is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to diagnose and manage hematologic and oncologic disorders through the evaluation of patients. Students will complete supervised histories and physicals, diagnostic plans, differential diagnoses and follow‐up plans.

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Define and describe laboratory procedures (blood smears, typing and crossmatching blood, tests of hemostasis, principles of flow cytometry and basic principles of DNA testing). (EPOs: MK-4)
  2. Define and describe common causes of anemia, thrombocytopenia, bleeding disorders and thrombophilic states. (EPOs: MK-4)
  3. Define and describe common manifestations of colon, breast, prostate and lymphatic cancers (EPOs: MK-4)
  4. Define and describe the approach to end of life care and palliative care of pain. (EPOs: MK-6, MK-8, MK-8)
  5. Define and describe indications and pharmacology of common chemotherapeutic drugs. (EPOs: MK-6, PC-7)
  6. Define and describe use of literature searches and evidence‐based medicine in Hematology/ Oncology. (EPOs: MK-1)
  7. Define and describe application of cancer genetics in Hematology/Oncology. (EPOs: PC-2)
