 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to provide medical students with a hands-on, immersive experience in performing essential clinical procedures within a simulated environment. Students will learn the essential elements of obtaining informed consent, and will have the opportunity to practice a variety of clinical procedures utilizing models and simulators.  All students will learn to perform specified procedures, and student will be able to determine some additional procedures that they would like to learn and practice.

Course Learning Objectives and EPOs:

  • Review and apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology for procedures (EPO: MK-4)
  • Perform basic procedures (EPO: PC-5)
  • Describe the risks and benefits of procedures (EPO: MK-7, PC-2, PC-4)
  • Cite the indications for specific procedures (EPO: PC-5, PC-6)
  • Perform selected procedures in Simulation skills Lab (EPO: PB-2, PC-5)
  • Refresh knowledge of skills reviewed using models and trainers (EPO: PBL-1, PBL-2, PBL-3)
  • Develop a process for informed consent for procedures (EPO: PC-2, PC-4, PC-5, PB-1, IPC-1)

LEVEL I (faculty teach and practice)

  • Arterial Line Insertion (trainer)
  • Central line (trainer)
  • IO (interosseous) insertion (trainer)
  • LP (trainer)

LEVEL II (practice with faculty and perform)

  • Ultrasound
  • I and D
  • Casting and Splinting
  • Intubation trainer (Adult,5YOA, and infant)
  • Suturing and Knot tying

LEVEL III (practice and perform)

  • Injection sites (subcutaneous and IM)
  • Catheterization (male and female )
  • Blood pressure
  • Breast Models with inserts
  • Ear models with inserts
  • Eye models with inserts
  • IV arms
  • Nasogastric tube
  • Pelvic Models
  • Prostate and Testicular models
  • Ultrasound Trainers 

Instructional Methods:

Demonstration, Independent Learning through videos and reading, simulations

Assessment Methods:

  • M4 non-clinical assessment (50% of grade)
  • Adequate completion of procedure and consent (50% of grade)

Prerequisites: Successful completion of all third-year required clerkships      

SAMPLE SCHEDULE:

Day 1: Student prework with videos, readings about procedures, and informed consent

Day 2: LEVEL 1 procedures with faculty

Day 3: reading and independent work

Day 4: LEVEL 2 procedures with faculty

Day 5: reading and independent work

Day 6: reading and independent work

Day 7: LEVEL 3 open lab

Day 8: reading, independent work, and practice

Day 9: assessment

Day 10: complete evaluation and debrief
