Elective Description/ Requirements:
This is an introductory, structured clinical experience under direct supervision designed to provide the student with experience diagnosing, treating, and caring for patients with allergies and immunologic disorders. Because of the high prevalence of allergic disorders among the general population, this elective should be of considerable practical value to the student planning a career in primary care (Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine) and select specialties (e.g., Dermatology and Otolaryngology).

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Describe the clinical manifestations of common allergic/atopic conditions (Allergic rhinitis, Asthma, Atopic dermatitis, Food allergy). (EPOs: MK-4)
  2. Prepare a comprehensive evaluation of new and follow-up patients with allergic disorders (Allergic rhinitis, Asthma, Atopic dermatitis, Food allergy). (EPOs: PC-1)
  3. Interpret laboratory, procedural and diagnostic data as they relate to allergic diseases (Allergic rhinitis, Asthma, Atopic dermatitis, Food allergy). (EPOs: PC-6)
  4. Describe recommended treatments of allergic disorders and the evidence used to formulate treatment recommendations. (EPOs:  MK-6, MK-7)
  5. Recognize principles of allergen avoidance and environmental control measures. (EPOs: MK-3, MK-7)
  6. Recognize potential immunodeficiency states and describe the work up for common immunodeficiencies (CVID, CGD, HAE). (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-6)

Professionalism: Students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Instructional Methods:

  1. Ambulatory Care Experience
  2. Grand rounds
  3. Independent study
  4. Interpretation of lab data
  5. Residency program/department conferences

Evaluation Methods:

  1. Attendance
  2. Written Pre-Test and Post-Test. Both tests are discussed with the learner after completion
  3. Faculty observation of encounter (at least 1 full encounter). Physical exam findings are reviewed.
  4. Clinical Competency Evaluation

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required Internal Medicine Clerkship
