Elective Description/ Requirements:
The goal of this elective is to introduce fourth-year students to their role as teachers. IM Student Chiefs will help orient third-year students to expectations of the Internal Medicine (IM) Clerkship. IM Student Chiefs will serve as student leaders and be available to the third-year students on the IM Clerkship for support and guidance with their experience, understanding and skills required to successfully complete IM Clerkship. IM Chiefs will have roles throughout the rotation, act as a liaison to faculty and will be provided clinical educational modules. IM Student Chiefs will work with Residency Chiefs to help promote a better educational experience for third-year students.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Develop skills to teach more effectively in various clinical and classroom scenarios. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-7, SBP-1, SBP-5)
  2. Assess the clerkship from a student’s perspective and suggest improvements where needed. (EPOs: IPC-2, PBL-1, PBL-2)
  3. Justify different assessment methods utilized in the medicine clerkship. (EPOs: PC-4, PC-6, PC-7)
  4. Develop the proper techniques in writing  appropriate narrative/summative feedback to the third-year students. (EPOs: IPC-2, PC-4, PC-6, PC-7)

Professionalism: Students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Instructional Methods: Small group, lecture, inpatient rounds, work on scholarly projects, Subject exam preparation with mini sessions for third-year students, Creation of an electronic journal for general reflection on the clerkship courses with suggestions and modifications in mind. 

Evaluation Methods:

  1. Attendance/ timely completion of educational tasks during the rotation
  2. Self-reflection and verbal and written feedback from the faculty and third-year students
  3. Faculty observation
  4. Clinical Competency Evaluation

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required Internal Medicine Clerkship
