Elective Description/Requirements: The students will learn different techniques for examining the eye including slit lamp examination and indirect ophthalmoscopy. The student will evaluate patients with eye disorders in an outpatient setting. Students will obtain clinical experience in evaluating patients with diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma as well as areas of Neuropathology and Pediatric Ophthalmology. Rotation will be organized by the faculty members based on student’s level of training and area of interest.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Document an adequate eye examination, including the fundamentals of slit lamp and dilated fundus exam. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-6, MK-1, MK-4)
  2. Evaluate and diagnose common ophthalmic disorders. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1)
  3. Distinguish the relationship of ocular manifestations and systemic disease. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  4. Establish treatment options for basic ophthalmic disease entitles. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-6)
  5. Discuss the management of ophthalmic disease in the pediatric and adult patient. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  6. Discuss the management and treatment of emergent ophthalmic disorders. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  7. Differentiate what conditions may be safely handled in a general practice vs. those which need to be referred to an ophthalmic specialist. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, PC-1 PBL-2)

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Yrs. 1&2 and a passing score on USMLE Step 1
