Elective Description/Requirements: The student will participate actively in the inpatient and outpatient total medical and psychosocial care of pediatric general hematology and pediatric oncology patients. The student will answer consults and develop the diagnostic work-up for new patients under the mentoring of the hematology faculty.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Describe and understand the basic laboratory procedures relevant to the practice of Hematology/Oncology (e.g. blood smear, type and cross match, tests of hemostasis, principles of flow cytometry) (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PBL-2, PBL-3)
  2. Identify common causes of anemia, thrombocytopenia, bleeding disorders, and polycythemia. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4)
  3. Summarize manifestations of common pediatric cancers (e.g. leukemia, lymphoma). (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, PC-3)
  4. Summarize indications and pharmacology of common chemotherapeutic drugs. (EPOs: MK-6)
  5. Be able to discuss the use of literature searches and evidenced based medicine in hematology/oncology. (EPOs: PC-3, MK-4, MK-5)
  6. Describe and understand management of oncologic emergencies such as tumor lysis syndrome and hypercalcemia and neutropenia with a fever. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-6, PC-8)
  7. Define terminology including remission, adjuvant, and neoadjuvant. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-7, MK-8, PC-6)
  8. Describe and understand the pathophysiology, diagnostic techniques, and treatment approaches for common pediatric cancer patients. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-5, MK-6)
  9. Accurately perform and record a history and physical examination. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-2, IPC-1, IPC-2)
  10. Describe and explain common oncologic procedures including bone marrow aspiration/biopsy and lumbar puncture. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PBL-1, PC-5)
