Elective Description/Requirements: The student will acquire the clinical skills to identify, evaluate, and initiate appropriate management of infectious diseases in both normal hosts and immune-compromised patients. Because of the high frequency of infectious diseases in the pediatric population, this elective should be of considerable practical value to the student planning a career in primary care.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Summarize an integrated approach to the diagnosis and management of infection in hospitalized patients. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PC-6, IPC-1, SBP-5)
  2. Integrate knowledge of major pathogenic organisms with knowledge of antibiotic groups in the selection of appropriate antibiotic regimens. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PC-6, IPC-1)
  3. Describe the pathophysiological approach to diagnosis, management, and prevention of common infectious diseases in the pediatric population (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PC-6, IPC-1)
  4. Review the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents in a variety of clinical settings. This should include mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and potential adverse reactions. (EPOs: MK-6, MK-7, PC-6)
  5. Describe for the indication of diagnostic procedures and interpretation of their results (e.g., lumbar puncture, arthrocentesis, thoracentesis, aspiration of abscess cavities and/or soft tissue). (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-6)
  6. Be able to discuss the the basic function of the immune system and of immunological foundations of diseases. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-5)

  7. Microbiology Tour with reflection paper

Evaluation Methods:

  1. Attendance
  2. Examination (formative for self-assessment)
  3. Faculty/Resident observation and assessment of clinical skills
  4. Completion of required work (e.g. presentation, reflection paper)
  5. Clinical Competency Evaluation

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required third year Pediatric clerkship.
