Elective Description/ Requirements: Student(s) will assist in consultations and management of a wide variety of patients with pulmonary diseases. This rotation is mostly inpatient but will include some outpatient. Students will participate on consultations, hospital ward rounds and MICU services. Participation in procedures including bronchoscopies, intubations, lung and chest wall biopsies, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, central lines, thoracentesis and pulmonary function testing will occur throughout the month. A didactic and bedside lecture course related to the pathophysiology of pulmonary diseases will be presented. 

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Interview and examine patients with the most common pulmonary and critical care diseases. (EPOs: PC-1)
  2. Recognize the symptoms and signs of common pulmonary diseases. (EPOs: MK-4)
  3. Describe the indications and establish the diagnostic significance of tests used in the recognition and management of pulmonary diseases. (EPOs: PC-6)
  4. Synthesize the clinical and laboratory information and create a pertinent problem list. (EPOs: PC-6, PC-7)
  5. Analyze the clinical and laboratory data and arrive at a reasonable diagnostic hypothesis. (EPOs: PC-6, PC-7)
  6. Outline plans for the management and treatment of the most common pulmonary and critical care diseases. (EPOs: PC-7)
