Elective Description/ Requirements:
Designed as a two-week supplement following Introduction to Diagnostic Radiology. One will participate in two weeks of Abdominal/Thoracic Radiology daily clinical activities. Students will attend all Abdominal/Thoracic radiology departmental case conferences provided during the rotation and various interdisciplinary conferences when available.  

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Defend common abdominal/thoracic radiology tests, including their accuracy, limitations and risks by utilizing ACR Appropriateness Criteria for common conditions. (EPOs: IPC-2, PC-6, PC-7, PC-8, PC-9, PBL-1, SBP-1, SBP-2)
  2. Discuss and interpret clinical abdominal/thoracic radiology cases which provide clinical, radiologic, and pathologic correlations on various disease processes. (EPOs: IPC-2, MK-1, MK-4, MK-7, PBL-2, PC-6, PC_7, PC-8, PC-9)
  3. Incorporate patient specific variables into ordering and interpreting appropriate abdominal/thoracic imaging tests. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-7, PBL-2, PC-6, PC-7, PC-8, PC-9)
  4. Identify the different abdominal/thoracic interventional procedures performed by radiology including their contraindications, risks and benefits. (EPOs: PC-6)
  5. Identify radiation, contrast, and MRI safety concerns to minimize and quantify risk from common abdominal imaging studies. (EPOs: IPC-3, MK-1, MK-7,PC-1, PC-5, PC-8)
  6. Communicate effectively with patients and clinicians when reporting imaging results or consulting on test appropriateness. (EPOs: IPC-2, IPC-3, PBL-3, )

Professionalism: UT/COMLS students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Instructional  Methods:

  1. Small-group, Clinical skills and Didactic Sessions
  2. Lecture/Didactic sessions
  3. Independent study
  4. Observation of and participation in daily radiology cases
  5. Observation of image guided procedures
  6. Observation of and participation of technologies used in radiology including but not limited to CT, MRI, US, DR, and DM.
  7. Review of teaching cases and discussion with faculty (PACS time)

Evaluation Methods:

  1. Attendance
  2. Evaluation of participation in small-group discussion during case conferences
  3. Faculty/resident observation and assessment of clinical skills
  4. End of rotation case presentations and online case submissions over the 2 weeks.
