Elective Description/Requirements: Students will participate in a mentored research project that includes laboratory or other practical opportunities for the direct application of the scientific method, accurate observation of biomedical phenomena, and critical analysis of data. Students will be expected to either collect or use data to test and/or verify hypotheses or to address questions about biomedical principles and/or phenomena.
Length of Clerkship: 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks

Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Evaluation Methods:
- Students must submit an abstract, a manuscript, or a 3-5 page narrative summary of their work

Special Requirements: Students must work with a research mentor to develop a brief description of the proposed project and activities during the elective. The elective description using this standard format must receive initial approval by the department clerkship director for clinical research or the department chair for basic science research. Final approval must be given by the Associate Dean for Clinical Undergraduate Medical Education.
