Elective Description/Requirements: Students will participate in a mentored research project that includes laboratory work involving the direct application of the scientific method involving biochemical, physiological, anatomical, and/or molecular biological approaches. Students will be expected to test hypotheses and to collect data relevant to those hypotheses that pertain to important neuroscience issues.
Length of Course: 8 weeks (Two 4-week blocks)
Educational Course Objectives:
- Apply basic science knowledge to clinical problems. (EPOs: MK-7)
- Perform a literature search on the topic of interest. (EPOs: MKM-7)
- Develop a research hypothesis and study design; analyze data, including statistical methods (EPOs: MK-7)
- Effectively communicate both orally and in writing, the results of the study. (EPOs: IPC-2)
- Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism in the performance, interpretation, and presentation of the research. (EPOs: PB-2)
Professionalism: Meet or exceed institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives
Instructional Methods: Independent study, wet laboratory approaches, problem solving, laboratory meetings, literature searches
Assessment Methods: Students must submit a manuscript or a 5-7 page narrative summary of their work that includes the rationale/background, method(s), results, and discussion of the results.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Year 1 and 2. If the project involves animal research, prior IACUC approval/training must be obtained PRIOR to the beginning of the clerkship.

Special Requirements: Students must identify a research mentor to develop a brief description of the proposed project and activities prior to the clerkship. If the project involves animal research, prior IACUC approval/training must be obtained PRIOR to the beginning of the clerkship. The project description must receive initial approval by the department chair.
