Trauma Night Shift Elective – TTH (4 week)

Elective Description/Requirements: This is a trauma night shift rotation. Students will be integral members of the Level 1 Trauma service caring for the critically ill general surgery and trauma surgery patients on night shifts. Students will work intimately with surgical attendings, residents, and PA’s assigned to Trauma nights. The schedule will be Tuesday-Saturday.  The goal is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to evaluate, diagnose, and manage trauma patients that come in overnight.  Students will be involved in resuscitations, emergency management, ICU/urgent inpatient management, and assisting with procedures in the OR. 

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Perform an initial history and physical exam of a full spectrum of patients admitted to the hospital including the acutely ill. (EPOs: PC-1)
  2. Perform and demonstrate the principles of resuscitations and hemodynamic monitoring management. (EPOs: PC-5, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  3. Implement a plan for diagnostic evaluation of the emergent patient. (EPOs: PC-5, MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  4. Interpret significant findings of laboratory and diagnostic studies. (EPOs: IPC-1, PC-1)
  5. Discuss a working knowledge of how to care for an emergent surgical patient and triage the critically ill surgical patient. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-7, PC-8, MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  6. Perform basic surgical skills and minor procedures frequently done in the trauma bay. (EPOs: PC-5)
  7. Demonstrate the ability to participate in surgical procedures respecting sterile technique and universal precautions. (EPOs: PC-5)
  8. Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and imaging studies. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-5, MK-7, IPC-1, IPC-2)
  9. Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-1, IPC-2)
