Elective Description/Requirements: This clerkship is designed to expose students to a variety of urologic disorders seen in the outpatient and inpatient setting as well as in the operating room. Designed for students considering a career in Urology or a surgical discipline. Students will be designated as an Acting Intern with increased responsibility for patient management – under supervision. The student will also be exposed to the variety and complexity of urologic diagnostic testing and surgical intervention.

Length of Course: 4 weeks

  1. Describe the normal anatomy of the urinary tract as it applies to urologic disorders. (EPO: MK-1)
  2. Describe common diseases presenting to the Urologist. (EPO: MK-1)
  3. Demonstrate ability to judiciously use radiographic and laboratory testing in evaluation and treatment of urologic disorders. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-6)
  4. Demonstrate the ability to obtain a history from patients, including sensitive areas such as sexual function and incontinence. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-3)
  5. Demonstrate a comprehensive urologic physical examination. (EPOs: PC-1)
  6. Assist in urologic diagnostic instrumentation and common urologic operations. (EPO: PC-6,)
  7. Describe common reasons for referral to urologic care by primary care physicians. (EPOs: IPC-2, PC-9)
  8. Demonstrate appropriate demeanor in the treatment of urologic disorders: Elicit a meaningful voiding, impotence and incontinence history. (EPOs: PC-6, PB-3)
  9. Participate in evening or weekend clinical care to support continuity of patient care and demonstrate professionalism in varied clinical settings. (EPO: IPC-2)
  10. Conduct structured patient handoffs using an evidence‑based communication approach to ensure safe and accurate transfer of care. (EPO: SBP-1)

Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Instructional Methods:

  1. Office evaluation by students with guidance and review with preceptor.
  2. Operating room observation and instruction, commensurate with knowledge and experience
  3. Inpatient rounds with preceptor
  4. Seeing consults in the ER & Inpatient Setting

Assessment Methods:

  1. Acting Internship Assessment

Prerequisites: Successful completion of third year required clerkships.

Special Requirements:

  1. As part of the acting internship, students are required to participate in at least one evening or weekend clinical experience.  This experience ensures exposure to the full spectrum of patient care responsibilities and supports readiness for residency-level schedules and work environment.
  2. Students are expected to participate in structured patient handoffs as part of their clinical responsibilities.  This includes observing and contributing to the sign-out processes to ensure safe, effective transitions of care.
  3. On call and other special requirements will be at the discretion of your preceptor.
