Elective Description/ Requirements:
The purpose of this rotation is to provide students with an overview of the clinical
specialty of Vascular Medicine. Students will be involved with the evaluation and
management of adult patients with vascular disease.
Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks
Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:
- Define the anatomy of the peripheral arterial and venous systems. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4)
- Describe the primary risk factors for peripheral vascular disease. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4)
- Recognize the difference between critical limb ischemia and acute limb ischemia. (EPOs: MK-4)
- Discuss options for anticoagulation of patients with venous thromboembolic disease. (EPOs: PC-7, MK-6)
- Describe non-atherosclerotic peripheral arterial conditions which present with claudication or gangrene. (EPOs: MK-4)
- Demonstrate the performance of a comprehensive vascular examination including the correct technique for palpation and assessment of pulses. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Discuss the appropriate utilization of vascular imaging including the indications, risks and costs of various approaches. (EPOs: PC-6, SBP-3)
- Utilize appropriate medical literature and guidelines to provide evidenced-based care to patients with vascular disease. (EPOs: PC-6, PBL-1, PBL-2)
- Demonstrate appropriate communication strategies to educate patients about their vascular care. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-3)
