Elective Description/Requirements:
Students will be exposed to the vascular disease process with the physiological approach
to understanding the pre and post-operative patient with vascular disease. There will
be exposure to the full spectrum of vascular disease with particular emphasis on fluids,
clotting mechanisms, renal, pulmonary, and cardiac status. The student will spend
time in the vascular lab to learn techniques and interpretation of vascular studies.
Students should understand the pathophysiology of both arterial and venous disease
by the competition of their rotation.
Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

- Perform a surgical history and physical examination focusing on vascular disease. (EPOs: PC-1, MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PC-6, PBL-2)
- Manage patients with vascular disease. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
- Describe the clotting mechanism, renal, pulmonary, and cardiac status of the vascular patient. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, MK-4, MK-7)
- Describe the fundamentals of hemodynamics as seen in the vascular laboratory. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, MK-4, MK-7)
- Assist with angiographic studies. (EPOs: PC-5)
- Interpret diagnostic studies including, angiographic studies and vascular lab procedures. (EPOs: IPC-1, PC-2, PC-1)
- Describe the treatment options of various vascular disease processes. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, MK-1, MK-4, MK-7)
- Manage and monitor the pre and postoperative vascular patient. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
- Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-1, IPC-3)
- Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1)
