Elective Description/Requirements:
Students will be assigned to work with wound care faculty and midlevels on the Vascular Surgery Service. Students will learn the different types of wounds, how to treat them, the etiology and how to manage them. They will be overseen by the vascular surgery fellows, surgical residents, and Vascular, Infectious disease, Podiatry and Plastics faculty. There will be exposure to a wide variety of wound care. Students will work up and manage acute and chronic wounds. Students will spend time in the wound care clinic at The Toledo Hospital to understand the techniques of wound care dressing and how to manage them. Students will also participate in the OR when wound care requires anesthesia.

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

  1. Obtain and document a wound care history and physical examination.(EPOs: PC-1, MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PC-6, PBL-2)
  2. Discuss the key issues in managing the wound care patient. (EPOs: PC-5, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  3. Discuss the basic science of wound management including debridement and dressing changes. (EPOs: PC-5,  MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  4. Implement a plan for wound care management including pain management. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-6)
  5. Discuss the important infectious disease processes associated with the development and management of chronic wounds. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  6. Write a complete and accurate daily progress note.(EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1, PC-3)
  7. Accurately present patient information concerning the patient's condition and progress. (EPOs: PC-6, MK-7, PC-1, PC-3, IPC-1, IPC-2)
