GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Community Health Project (CHP) provides medical students with a deeper and broader understanding of the socioeconomic, cultural and environmental factors that contribute to an individual’s health status. This project seeks to provide valuable benefits to participating social service agencies and the people they serve. The principal component of the CHP is the Summer Internship Program which places students in a variety of social service agencies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of this M1 elective, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the impact of social determinants of health on community health. (EPOs: MK-3, PC-3).
  2. Discuss how community programs may improve population health (EPOs: MK-3, PC-3)
  3. Demonstrate professional behaviors in all interactions (EPOs: PB-1)

METHODS OF TEACHING: This course is designed to provide experiences understanding community health to MD students between their M1 and M2 years. Experiences will be dictated by community partners.   

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT AND STUDENT FEEDBACK: Students are required to complete a reflection paper illustrating their experience. Optionally, students can prepare a poster to present during the Medical Student Research Program Symposium. To receive a grade of Satisfactory the student must complete self-reflection.              

PREREQUISITES: Completion of first year of the MD program.  Academic good standing.

Institutional Classroom Attendance Policy

If you have not attended/participated in class (completed any course activities or assignments) within this period, I am required by federal law to report you as having not attended class. Unfortunately, not attending/participating in class impacts your eligibility to receive financial aid, so it is VERY important that you attend class and complete course work early. Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss options and/or possible accommodations if you have any difficulty completing assignments.
