Trustees Select Firm to Assist in Search for UToledo’s Next President
The University of Toledo Board of Trustees Chair Patrick J. Kenney today announced
the selection of Education Executives to assist the Board in its national search for
the University’s next president. Education Executives
“The Board of Trustees respects the important role The University of Toledo plays
in our community and the importance of ensuring we look nationally for the best leader
to advance our public research university and academic medical center missions,” Kenney
said. “We were impressed with Education Executives’ experience in presidential searches,
and we are confident they will guide us in attracting outstanding individuals for
consideration and assist us with our efforts to engage University stakeholders – faculty,
staff, students, alumni, donors and community members – to best inform the Board in
its search and selection of The University of Toledo’s 19th president.”
The Board’s goal is to have UToledo's next permanent president identified and in place
prior to the start of next academic year.
A presidential search website utoledo.edu/presidential-search has been created to provide updates throughout the search process. Updates about
process and committees associated with the search will be posted on that site as appropriate.

Stakeholder Committee Announced for UToledo Presidential Search
The University of Toledo Board of Trustees is engaging stakeholders in the search
for the University’s next permanent president.
UToledo Board of Trustees Chair Patrick J. Kenney announced today the formation of
a Presidential Profile Committee that will be responsible for drafting the position
profile for the University’s 19th president.
“This critical document will describe our university, highlighting our distinctive
strengths, culture, values and aspirations for distinguishing ourselves among our
peers as we move into the future,” Kenney said. “The position profile also articulates
the leadership opportunities that will define success for our next President and the
skills and experiences we seek in that individual.”
Education Executives, the firm the UToledo Board of Trustees has selected to assist
with the search, will provide counsel for the committee's work.
Composed of internal and external stakeholders, members of the Presidential Profile Committee are:
- Dr. Imran I. Ali, Interim Dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences
- Dr. Shaza Aouthmany, Emergency Medicine Physician and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences
- Dr. Lesley M. Berhan, Associate Dean for Student Success and Strategic Initiatives and Associate Professor in the College of Engineering
- Kevin Bishop, UToledo Student Trustee
- Bryan Blair, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Director of Athletics
- Dr. Frank Calzonetti, Vice President for Innovation and Economic Development

UToledo Presidential Search Committee Announced
The University of Toledo Board of Trustees has formed a Presidential Search Committee as the next step in the process for identifying the University’s next permanent president.
UToledo Board of Trustees Chair Patrick J. Kenney announced today the Presidential Search Committee that will include all trustees, members of the Presidential Profile Committee and external stakeholders that will be responsible for reviewing candidates and selecting UToledo’s next leader.
Kenney previously announced the formation of a Presidential Profile Committee composed of internal and external stakeholders that is working to draft the position profile for the University’s 19th president.
“We appreciate the members of the Presidential Profile Committee for their work in creating the position profile and look forward to the efforts of the Presidential Search Committee in selecting UToledo’s next leader,” Kenney said. “This presidential search is important for both the University and for our greater Toledo community, and we are thankful to have such thoughtful input throughout the process.”
Kenney will co-chair the Presidential Search Committee along with UToledo Trustee Stephen P. Ciucci.

Recruitment Begins for UToledo’s Next President with Release of Leadership Profile
The University of Toledo is searching for “a visionary leader committed to imagining the potential of this institution” as the recruitment process gets underway for the next permanent president with the public release of the leadership profile.
The profile document describes the expectations for UToledo’s 19th president and their opportunity to make an impact on the institution. The document also describes the University for potential candidates with a focus on academic and student success, research and innovation, healthcare and medical education, athletics, and the Toledo region and community engagement.
“As the leadership profile lays out, we are seeking a leader committed to the institution’s values who can generate enthusiasm on campus and beyond to take the University to a higher level of achievement and recognition,” UToledo Board of Trustees Chair Patrick J. Kenney said. “We are looking for someone who is visionary, collaborative, committed and transparent to serve as UToledo’s 19th president.”
The profile was created by a Presidential Profile Committee composed of internal and external stakeholders who collaborated over the course of several weeks to describe the leadership opportunity and generate interest in UToledo and the Toledo community. The document will be used by Education Executives, the firm the UToledo Board of Trustees has selected to assist with the search, to recruit candidates for the position.
A Presidential Search Committee co-chaired by Kenney and UToledo Trustee Stephen P. Ciucci that includes all trustees, members of the Presidential Profile Committee and external stakeholders will be responsible for reviewing candidates and selecting UToledo’s next leader.
“This is a great opportunity for a creative and collaborative leader who is excited to join our community in northwest Ohio and make a difference,” Ciucci said. “For more than 150 years UToledo has championed academic, healthcare and athletic excellence, community engagement, and research and innovation. It’s an important and valuable legacy to continue.”

UToledo Presidential Search on Schedule
The University of Toledo is actively progressing in its search for its 19th president.
The Presidential Search Committee is finalizing first-round virtual interviews with a pool of highly qualified candidates. Additional interview rounds will occur in March and April, followed by final contract negotiations — all aimed at securing a visionary leader before the next academic year begins.
UToledo Board of Trustees Chair Patrick J. Kenney underscored the significance of this process for both the University and the Toledo community.
“We are acutely aware of how vital this presidential search is for the University and for the entire Toledo community,” he said. “We appreciate the encouraging support from so many individuals both near and far, and while we respect the candidates’ confidentiality, I am delighted to report that we are engaging with excellent, impressive individuals who are excited about the opportunity to lead UToledo.”
Kenney co-chairs the search committee with UToledo Trustee Stephen P. Ciucci. The committee comprises all University trustees as well as key internal and external stakeholders.

Update on Presidential Search
Statement from the UToledo Board of Trustees
The search for The University of Toledo’s 19th president continues on schedule with high-quality candidates who are excited about the opportunity to fulfill the potential of UToledo as a transformative public research university and health system.
At this point in the presidential search process, the search committee has invited the finalists, which are all external candidates, to visit our campuses so they can learn more about the institution and we can learn more about them and their potential impact on UToledo.
The Board of Trustees recognizes the excellent leadership of Matt Schroeder who has served as interim president. His support throughout the search process is critically important and appreciated.
“I appreciate the Board giving me the opportunity to lead UToledo as interim president. While I am not advancing to the next phase of the search, I respect the process and remain fully committed to UToledo and our success,” Schroeder said.
