Submit an Invention

The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) requires UToledo faculty, student, and staff inventors to submit a disclosure form to begin the formal technology transfer process. Be careful not to disclose your new invention to anyone outside The University of Toledo before a confidential disclosure agreement is in place or a patent application is filed. 

Please contact the TTO before disclosing your invention via poster presentation, publication, or any other method of communication (including social media) so we can advise you of the appropriate protection for your technology. Visit our Publish and Perish page for more details.

Invention Disclosure (IDF):

Submit an IDF for any patentable technology not considered a research resource. UToledo inventors should fully describe an idea so the options for commercialization can be evaluated and pursued.

Research Tool Disclosure (RTDF) :

Submit a RTDF for any new technology considered a research resource used in the laboratory, which includes cell lines, antibodies, proteins, peptides, reagents, animal models, growth factors, clones and cloning tools.


Inventor Portal for UToledo faculty, staff, and students:

There are two separate links to the Inventor Portal, depending upon your UToledo status. 

Current status - active UTAD account:

  • Includes current faculty, staff, and students with an active UTAD account. 
  • Access the UToledo Inventor Portal using your active UTAD credentials (same sign in as myUT portal).
  • A UToledo email address is required when initially requesting access; all requests made without a UToledo email will be denied.

Former status - inactive UTAD account:

  • Includes former faculty, staff, or students without an active UTAD account.
  • Former UToledo inventors who need to sign an IDF must request a new inventor portal link.
  • Email your account request to Jackie Wilkinson to receive a link to the Inventor Portal.

Steps to Submit Your Disclosure

  • Active Inventor Portal Users (not waiting for account approval), proceed to Step 1 below. 
  • New Users (including active and inactive UTAD accounts) must receive an account confirmation email from Jackie Wilkinson before proceeding.
  1. Access the UToledo Inventor Portal to submit your disclosure. 
  2. Choose "Add New Disclosure" from the left menu to open the New Disclosure screen. 
    • Add the Title of Invention/Research Tool
    • Choose the Type of Disclosure (Invention or Research Tool)
    • Click the Create New Disclosure to continue to the "Disclosure" window
  3. In the Disclosure window:
    • Verify the Disclosure Type - select before proceeding (top left of form)
    • Enter the invention information by reviewing each numbered section (optional sections are also available)
    • Select "Submit for Review" to complete the form (the status will change from Draft to Submitted)

TTO staff will only review completed disclosures (i.e., no longer in the Draft Review Stage).
