What is Toledo Excel?
Toledo Excel is a scholarship incentive program that recruits high-achieving, 8th grade students in the metropolitan Toledo area. Selected students who fulfill our academic and participation requirements receive a tuition-based scholarship to The University of Toledo upon high school graduation.
What is the purpose of the program?
Excel is designed to prepare students, beginning in the 8th grade, for success in college by providing them with academic enrichment services and activities throughout their high school years. Excel is also dedicated to making students into conscientious and active members of the local community. We offer a variety of enrichment services and activities that take place on The University of Toledo campus in order to familiarize them with the university and collegiate expectations. These services and activities include:
Summer Institutes * Saturday School * Tutoring * Academic Advising * Career Planning * Community Service * Annual Conference for Aspiring Youth * Travel Opportunities * Student Retreats *
What is the history of Toledo Excel?
Excel has been in existence for over 35 years; to date close to 2,000 students have been inducted into the program and their academic successes speak for themselves: 99% high school graduation rate; 95% college enrollment rate; 84% college graduates or students matriculating towards graduation.
Who is eligible?
Any 8th grade student attending school in the city of Toledo who has at least a 3.0 GPA, scores at or above grade level on their standardized test scores.
What is the application process?
To apply, students must complete the online application. Paper applications are no longer being accepted. All requested information: grades, transcripts, test scores, and the 250 word essay completed by the student on “Why I Want to Go to College," should be attached to your online application. Once complete, click the submit button and you will receive an auto reply that your application has been submitted successfully. Once all applications have been reviewed and if eligible, you will receive an invitation to attend a mandatory Toledo Excel Orientation meeting. Please note that late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
What is the selection process?
The selection process is a competitive one; each year hundreds of highly qualified students apply for the limited available spots. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept everybody who applies. After all applications are received and reviewed, the top applicants are then brought in for a personal interview. Determination as to who is selected for the program is based on a combination of the following components: grades, test scores, essay and interview. Selections are made at the sole discretion of Toledo Excel staff and are final.
We look forward to receiving your application. Please do not hesitate to contact the Toledo Excel office, at (419) 530-3820 if you have any questions.
