OUTLaw is a student organization at Toledo Law that provides a safe space and networking opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals and community allies. Through hosting educational and social events, discussions, and providing an inclusive community, OUTLaw makes sure that any student looking for a place to belong is welcome in their community.

“I wanted to belong to a community that understands my identity and experiences,” said OUTLaw President, Julianna Fierro. “I joined OUTLaw for the community, and I’m excited that the organization continues to focus on creating that welcoming environment.” Fierro joined OUTLaw as a 1L and served as the SBA Representative, saying that the opportunity to be involved early on opened doors for her as she continued with her law school career.

Hannah Rogener, OUTLaw Secretary, shared that she joined the organization because she never knew any LGBTQ+ attorneys, even though she knew they existed, which led her to believe they might not feel safe being out. “By joining OUTLaw, I hope to send a message to other students, and maybe even attorneys, that being out and proud is feasible in the legal community. I also joined to bring awareness to LGBTQ+ issues - our voices deserve to be heard just as much as straight students and attorneys.”

Two major events that OUTLaw organizes each year are Clothes for Shows Drag Show and a Name Change Clinic. Both events focus on inclusion in the Toledo Law community and beyond.

Clothes for Shows Drag Show is an exciting and lively drag show event that includes performances by members of the Toledo Law community. Admission is donation based – asking for gently used professional attire. While the event leans heavily on being a social and fun night out, it isn’t without its philanthropic purpose. The collected clothing donations are used for a community closet offered during the Name Change Clinic.

The free and public Name Change Clinic is run with support from the Toledo Law Clinic. The Name Change Clinic is open to residents of Lucas County, Ohio who are going through a legal name change and have questions or need guidance. OUTLaw sets up a community closet during the event as well so participants are able to shop for free clothing and accessories that align with their identity. The next Name Change Clinic is being planned for spring 2024.

“Being able to help others within the LGBTQ+ community was incredibly gratifying and educational,” says Fierro when talking about last spring’s Name Change Clinic. “I gained legal and interpersonal skills from the clinic, and the sense of community was incredible.”

By creating a welcoming and safe environment through raising awareness and support for LGBTQ+ individuals, OUTLaw is making strides in increasing equity and inclusion within the Toledo Law and legal communities.

Don’t miss this year’s Clothes for Shows Drag Show, tomorrow, November 10 at 7 p.m. in the Law Center Forum.
