Toxicity, Microbiology and Specific Health Concerns Subcommittee

Committee Charge

The recent water crisis in Toledo represents a real focus to human health. Faculty members on the Health Science Campus of the University of Toledo propose to address four key issues in the areas of hepatic toxicity of microcyctin, measurement of microcystin levels in biological samples, microbiological approaches to solve the crisis, and treatment of hospital water system. Advanced technologies, specific expertise, and state-of-the-art facilities locally available on this campus include: a) scientific and clinical expertise in liver diseases, b) acute and chronic toxicity study, c) clinical samples collected from Toledo residents before, during, and after the water crisis, d) bacterial gene regulation, e) genetic and protein engineering, f) immunological assay development, g) analytical chemistry and h) biosafety in health care.
