Rita Charon, M.D., Ph.D.

S. Amjad Hussain invited Lecturer in Medical Humanities

Dr. Charon is the Bernard Schoenberg Professor of Social Medicine, the founding chair of the Department of Medical Humanities and Ethics, and Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. She is the Executive Director of Columbia Narrative Medicine. At CUIMC, she directs the Apgar Academy for Medical Educators, Columbia Commons Interprofessional Education, and the Narrative and Social Medicine Track of the Scholarly Projects. She completed the M.D. at Harvard and the Ph.D. in English at Columbia.

Dr. David R. Williams
2023 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient

Dr. Williams is the Florence and Laura Norman Professor of Public Health and Chair, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is also a Professor of African and African American Studies and Sociology at Harvard University.  Previously, he served on the faculty of Yale University (6 years) and the University of Michigan (14 years). He holds an M.P.H. from Loma Linda University and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Williams is an internationally recognized authority on social influences on health.
