  • Mr. Salvio Almeida submitted a paper, titled: "Review of Artificial Neural Networks and a Feed-Forward Network to Account for Concrete Cracking in Anchorage Analysis"  for publication in Artificial Intelligence in the Concrete Industry of Concrete by American Concrete Institute.
  • Dr. Guner attended the TRB's Annual Meeting.
  • Mr. Upendra Chaulagain has started his MS studies in Dr. Guner's research team.

  • Dr. Guner presented research results on the strength assessment and load rating of bridge pier caps in the CPD Conference for the Engineers Foundation of Ohio.

  • PhD Candidate Renaud Franssen successfully defended his dissertation and completed his graduation process. Congratulations to Renaud for his high quality and productive PhD studies!

  • Dr. Salgado's paper, titled: “Out-Of-Plane Constitutive Model to Capture the Tsunami Load Response of Cross Laminated Timber Buildings,"  is published in the Proceedings of the 17th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (17WCEE).
AUGUST 2020
  • Dr. Guner's paper, titled: “Cracked Continuum Modeling of Reinforced Concrete Elements under Impact,"  is accepted for publication in High Strain Rate Mechanics and Impact Behavior of Concrete by American Concrete Institute.
  • University has opened for in-person classes; Dr. Guner's Structural Analysis course has started.
JULY 2020
  • PhD Candidate Rafael Salgado successfully defended his dissertation and completed his graduation process. Congratulations to Rafael for his high quality and productive PhD studies! 
  • PhD Candidate Rafael Salgado submitted a journal paper, titled: "A Structural Resilience-Based Environmental Impact Assessment Framework for Natural Hazard Loads" to Structure and Infrastructure Engineering .
  • Our STM-Cap program and project report is included in ODOT's updated Bridge Design Manual published in July 2020.

  • Ms Student Anish Sharma's paper, titled: "System-Level Modeling Methodology for Capturing the Pile Cap, Helical Pile Group, and Soil Interaction under Uplift Loads," is published in Engineering Structures. Congratulations to Anish!
  • PhD Candidate Renaud Franssen submitted a journal paper, titled: "Numerical Modelling Approach for UHPFRC Members Including Crack Spacing Formulations" to Engineering Structures.

  • Dr. Guner is scheduled to presented a collaborative research, titled: Cracked Continuum Modeling of Reinforced Concrete Elements under Impact, during the ACI Convention in Chicago, IL. (cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic)

  • Congratulations to PhD Candidate Rafael Salgado for receiving the Scholarly Achievement Award from the College of Engineering. This is a prestigious award and Rafael is the first Civil Engineering student to receive it. Well done!

  • Ms. Student Sundar Chiluwal’s research, titled: Helical Pile-to-Footing Connections Subjected to Uplift Forces: Improving Future Practice, is presented in the 44th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Chicago, IL.

  • Our research group made two presentations in the  IABSE Congress in New York City. The first one is based on Ph.D. and MS student’s Rafael Salgado and Anish Sharma's research and titled: A Two-Stage Strength Assessment Methodology for Deep Concrete Cap Beams. The second one is based on Mr. Salvio Almeida’s research and titled: Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Non-Structural Components Anchorage under Extreme Wind Loads.

  • Dr. Akkaya's paper, titled: A constitutive model for the inelastic buckling behavior of reinforcing bars, is published in the ACI Structural Journal.
  • Our research group made two presentations in the ACI Spring Convention in Quebec City, Canada. The first one was based on MS student Anish Sharma's research and titled: An Advanced Nonlinear Modeling Methodology for the Strength Evaluation of Deep Bridge Bents. The second one was based on Dr. Guner's industry project and titled: Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis and Retrofit Design of a Compressor Foundation: A Case Study.

  • Dr. Guner gave a presentation at the joint dinner meeting of the Structural Engineering Association of  Arizona and ASCE Geo-Institute Chapter of Arizona, titled: Strengthening of Caisson Foundations.
  • Two summer research interns are accepted into the research team.

  • Ph.D. Candidate Rafael Salgado's paper, titled: Numerical Analysis Methodology for Deep Cap Beams Retrofitted with Fiber Reinforced Polymers, is accepted for publication by the ACI Special Publication: Advances in Concrete Bridges.
DECEMBER 2018
  • MS students Pappu Baniya, Anish Sharma and Dr. Guner traveled to the headquarters of ODOT to make a research-result presentation for the project titled: Evaluation of Reserve Shear Capacity of Bridge Pier Caps Using the Deep Beam Theory. This project was one of the four projects selected for a result presentation.
  • Dr. Guner co-moderated a session and presented a paper, titled: Numerical Performance Assessment of Bridge Bents Retrofitted with Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymers, at the 3rd R. N. Raikar Memorial International Conference of the ACI Chapter of India in Mumbai, India.
  • Ph.D. Candidate Jian Liu's paper, titled: Mixed-Type Modeling of Structures with Slender and Deep Beam Elements, is accepted for publication by the ACI Structural Journal.

  • Ph.D. Candidate Mr. Renaud Franssen presented a research paper, titled: A Study on the Numerical Modelling of UHPFRC-Strengthened Members, in the 5th International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation, and Retrofitting (ICCRRR 2018), in Cape Town, South Africa.

  • Dr. Guner presented a paper, titled: Response Simulation of UHPFRC Members, at the fib Congress in Melbourne, Australia.
  • MS student Mr. Salvio Aragão Almeida Júnior made poster presentation, titled: Numerical Simulation of Anchorage to Concrete under Extreme Wind Loads, in American Concrete Institute's Fall Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Congratulations to Salvio on his first poster presentation!
AUGUST 2018
  • Dr. Guner was selected as a 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) ExCEEd Fellow. The society’s Committee on Faculty Development selected Dr. Guner because of his commitment to excellence in education and a willingness to serve as a future role model for effective teaching at the University of Toledo, College of Engineering. Dr. Guner and other fellows met at Florida Gulf Coast University over six-days to participate in a workshop on teaching civil engineering.

  • Dr. Guner presented a paper, titled: Seismic Response History Analysis for the Next Generation of Buildings, at the 16th European Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Thessaloniki, Greece.
MAY 2018
  • New version of VecTor5 is released! This is a major update. In addition to a number of formulation improvements, this version uses a sparse matrix solution technique to significantly reduce the computational time for larger models. For a model with 4oo nodes, for example, the new version completes the analysis in 13 minutes versus the old version in 83 minutes. The new installation package includes sample models, screenshots, video links, and various guidelines to simplify the modeling process. See the Modeling section of the web site for download.
  • Dr. Guner participated in NSF NHERI's Experimental Facility Workshop at the University of California, Davis.
APRIL 2018
  • Dr. Guner moderated an innovative session titled: Recent Advances in Nonlinear Structural Analysis Methods for Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE). Thirteen researchers from the US, Canada, and Europe discussed the state-of-the-art analysis methodologies, material behavior models, and applicable codes for the proper use of the PBEE.

  • Dr. Guner is awarded a research project, titled: Development of Design Recommendations for Helical Pile Anchorages Subjected to Cyclic Load Reversals, by DFI's Helical Piles and Tiebacks Committee.
  • Dr. Akkaya submitted a journal paper manuscript, titled: A constitutive model for the inelastic buckling behavior of reinforcing bars, co-authored by Dr. Guner and Dr. Vecchio to ACI Structural Journal.
  • Ph.D. Candidate Mr. Rafael Salgado presented a research paper, titled: Towards Modeling Deep-Beam Action on Numerical Assessment of Bridge Cap Beams, in American Concrete Institute's Spring Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • MS student Mr. Salvio Aragão Almeida Júnior made a research presentation, titled High-Fidelity Numerical Model of Post-Installed Steel Anchors under Dynamic Loads, in American Concrete Institute's Spring Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.   • Ph.D. candidate Mr. Rafael Salgado presented a research paper, titled: Towards an Effective Assessment of Cap Beams Retrofitted with Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymers, in TRB’s 97th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
  • Dr. Guner submitted a National Science Foundation research proposal seeking funding to advance the current understanding and improve the hurricane-resiliency of non-structural building components.
