Office of Experiential Learning

About

What is experiential learning?

While the experiential learning activities are overwhelmingly positive and exciting, they can also be difficult for students to navigate.  This is because of the necessary rules, regulations, and procedures that come with the direct practice of the life-changing experiences they are training to provide.  In order to streamline these processes and allow students to focus on the most important things- their learning and the well-being of those they serve, CHHS has created a dedicated Office of Experiential Learning to manage all of the “behind the scenes” processes for our students, programs, and affiliate sites.

What does a student need in order to be eligible for an experiential learning rotation?

  • Students must finish all prerequisite courses before starting fieldwork or clinical rotations.
  • Depending on the program, students may be required to meet certain health and eligibility requirements in order to engage in direct patient/student/client care.  Students can find the specific eligibility requirements for their individual program on the Student Eligibility Requirements page.
  • CHHS programs with student eligibility requirements utilize a web-based solution called Exxat Approve that allows students to upload and manage their required documents in one place.  In addition to Exxat, the Office of Experiential Learning has a dedicated staff member who can assist students in finding places to make appointments or provide clarification regarding requirements.  The Student Eligibility Secretary can be reached at chhsstudenteligibility@utoledo.edu

What makes a site eligible to host a student at their facility or organization?

  • Before an organization or facility can host a student, they must first have a valid academic affiliation agreement with the University of Toledo College of Health & Human Services.  A new academic affiliation agreement can be initiated by completing a request form here: CHHS- Affiliation Agreement Request Form.  If an organization/facility has their own agreement template, they can contact the Site Eligibility Coordinator at chhssites@utoledo.edu, and he will initiate the review process with our Office of Legal Affairs.
  • Once an academic affiliation agreement has been finalized, any appropriate practitioner employed by that organization may host a student.  CHHS will have to verify that the practitioner holds the appropriate license/credentials within their field before that individual is permitted to supervise students.  Practitioners can submit their information and credentials here: Experiential Learning Credentialing Submission Form
