Security Information for Students

Responsible Use Policy

Passwords
Strong passwords should be at least 8 characters long and consist of Alpha (upper/lower case), Numeric, and Special Characters.  Avoid dictionary words; they are easier to crack with automated systems. 

UT Passwords must be changed at least every 180 days.

Keeping Your Computer Secured
If you own a computer, you should always keep your system secured.  This can be done by:

  • Patching your OS and software regularly. 
    For Windows software visit http://update.microsoft.com
    For Apple software visit http://www.apple.com/support/downloads
  • Activating your firewall.
  • Installing and updating your Anti-virus and Anti-SpyWare software.
    Residence Hall Students:  The University of Toledo provides McAfee Anti-Virus Software for all Residence Hall Students.
    You can download and install your Anti-Virus software by logging into your myUTaccount and clicking on the Download Virus Scanner button.  Your McAfee Anti-Virus Software is licensed for 1 year.
  • Using encryption for sensitive information
  • Not giving out your UTAD passwords
    University IT personnel will *NEVER* ask you for your password.
  • Never provide User IDs and Passwords to unsolicited email requests (Phishing).
  • Locking your door/keeping an eye on your personal belongings at all times

Copyrights and Piracy 
Do not download or share copyrighted material (i.e. music, video, software, etc.) unless you are buying it.  Peer-to-peer communication on the University’s network is constantly monitored by the RIAA and MPAA (recording and motion picture industries.)  Violations can result in criminal charges and fines up to $250,000 per title.  Click here for more Copyrights and Piracy information.
