Scholarships
Completing a college education is no small task, but to help you along the way, The University of Toledo and the Department of Communication and Media offer scholarships, internships, financial aid, and work-study programs. Last year, the department awarded over $70,000 in scholarships. If you're eligible, make sure you take the time to apply.

Department-Specific Scholarships
The Buckeye Cablesystem Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to full-time junior or senior-level communication majors with a focus on broadcasting. Recipients must have a minimum 2.75 GPA and be active in campus or community broadcast activities. Recipients must also have graduated from a high school in the franchise service area of Buckeye CableSystem. Scholarship requires a current FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Christopher States Scholarship Award in Communication and Broadcasting
The scholarship is open to full-time students who have a study emphasis in broadcasting or radio/television production, are in good academic standing, must be Juniors or Seniors, and demonstrate a clear interest or proficiency in the study of the history of broadcasting or the field of radio/television production.
The Doug Sinn Memorial Scholarship
Students must be majoring in communication with a study emphasis in broadcasting. Eligibility is based upon merit. The scholarship is renewable but not automatic (students will need to reapply each year).
The Ethel Wilcox Scholarship
Students must be full-time, Junior status, and majoring in Communication. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be active in campus or community activities. The scholarship is not renewable.
John A. Bergener and Brandt A. England Scholarship
Applicants must be of at least sophomore status, not residing in the home of their parent or guardian, must be majoring in communication, have a 2.5 GPA or higher, and have a financial need. The scholarship is renewable provided you continue to meet the criteria (you will need to reapply each year).
Justin R. Dunlop Media Communication Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to junior or senior-level students majoring in media communication who have a demonstrated passion for television broadcasting and production with an avid desire to work in the field post-graduation. Special consideration is given to students with a sports interest. Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
The Margaret Patterson Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students in the Department of Communication and Media with a minimum 3.5 GPA.
The Minnie and Shakee Lacey Memorial Award
Scholarship awarded to journalism students in the Department of Communication and Media. Scholarship requires a current FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid.
The Richard Cadwell Pheatt Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students with first preference to students enrolled in communication. Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
The Terry L. Marti Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to junior or senior-level students in the Department of Communication and Media. Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and involvement in extracurricular activities and community service.
The William Day Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student in the Department of Communication and Media in the Judith Herb College of Arts, Social Sciences and Education. Recipients must have a minimum 2.8 GPA.
The Press Club of Toledo Scholarship
The Press Club of Toledo offers the Kurt G. Franck Scholarship, awarded annually to a student from The University of Toledo who epitomizes service and dedication to the profession of journalism. The student must be from Northwest Ohio or Southeast Michigan; be a journalism, communications, or related major; be involved as a journalist with campus media and/or local professional journalism organizations; and have a desire to focus their career in journalism. Applications can be completed on this application form.
Don Reiber Student Production Fund
The Department of Communication and Media Scholarship Committee (consisting of Broadcasting/Media faculty and Media staff) awards stipends of varying amounts. The stipends are to be awarded at the end of each academic year, and the Department of Communication and Media will track and annually determine the minimum number of games worked per sport to qualify for the stipend. Students must be full-time, sophomore status, with a 2.0 GPA or higher, and demonstrate a clear interest or proficiency in the field of television broadcasting. Involvement in working with the media services will enhance the students' applications.
The Department of Communication and Media Outstanding Student Award
The award is open to all graduating department majors who demonstrate pre-professional excellence and performance. Involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service enhances candidates’ applications.
