Beyond Conviction Clinic
The Beyond Conviction Clinic is a two (2) credit-hour course that provides hands-on experience representing individuals seeking to overcome the legal and practical barriers that follow a criminal conviction. Through direct client representation and pro se assistance, students will assist clients with pardons, expungements, record sealing and other forms of post-conviction relief. Students will also address the collateral consequences of criminal records affecting employment, housing, education, professional licensing, and civic participation.
The clinic takes a holistic approach to advocacy, training students to understand the broad impact of criminal convictions on individuals, families, and communities. In addition to developing advocacy, counseling, and client-interviewing skills, students will learn how to identify and address the legal and non-legal challenges that arise during the reentry process. Through this work, students will help clients move beyond their convictions and expand access to opportunity, stability, and full participation in community life.
Class will be at UT Law. Office Hours will consist of 3 hours/week and be held at Toledo Legal Aid Society (701 Jefferson Ave.).
PLEASE NOTE: Enrollment in the clinic offerings is limited. Acceptance is determined by the clinical faculty on a case-by-case basis.
