The Department of Medical Education values your participation and contribution to our medical students' education. Please look at the different educational activities that are scheduled throughout the year; feel free to choose one (or more!).  No experience is necessary — just a desire to teach our students!

Bridge Course 2024

“Code Blue" SIMULATION

This is a 2-case simulation of the care of ill patients. 

During simulation, faculty will observe the student group (rising M3s) encounter an ill patient, whom they must work together to evaluate and manage. At the conclusion of the simulation, faculty will debrief the student groups on the medical aspects of the cases, but will also consider effective communication and teamwork during the simulation, emphasizing these critical skills. A brief faculty development session prior to the simulation will be provided by the course director.

“Speed Learning" SKILLS SESSIONS

This multi-station learning experience where students practice several key skills for clerkship. 

During this activity, students will rotate through a multi-station learning experience! Faculty will be assigned to proctor learning stations, including differential diagnosis, reading EKGs, x-rays, and delivering oral presentations. This activity is critical for success as they prepare to enter the clinical environment! A brief faculty development session prior to the session will be provided.

“Difficult Conversations" WORKSHOP

Times offered

During this large group active learning session, students will role play delivering difficult news.

During this activity, students will learn strategies for delivering difficult news. Then they will break into groups and role play the delivering of a new cancer diagnosis. Individual faculty will observe groups and then will debrief together the large student group for the students’ shared experiences.

Advanced Clinical Care 2

“Night on-call” SIMULATION

This is a 2-station high-fidelity simulation of typical on-call patient conditions. 

During this activity, faculty will observe the M4s as they navigate through a high-fidelity simulation of typical on-call patient scenarios. Following the simulation activity, the faculty will provide formative feedback and debrief the clinical scenarios. A brief faculty development session prior to the simulation will be provided by the course director.

"Family  Update" STANDARDIZED PATIENT ACTIVITY

This is a standardized patient encounter where students provide an update to the family of a critical patient. 

During this activity, faculty will listen to M4s as they provide family with an update of a critical patient. During this standardized patient encounter, the M4 provides an update by phone to a family member, and once complete, the faculty debriefs the student group. A brief faculty development session prior to the simulation will be provided by the course director.

"Microskills" WORKSHOP

This is a workshop where faculty observe M4 students giving feedback to M1 students. 

During this activity, M1 students give oral patient presentations to M4 students.  In preparation to be resident teachers in the coming weeks and months, M4 will provide feedback to the M1 on the presentation. The faculty’s’ focus is to evaluate and provide feedback to the M4 students on their teaching/feedback skills.
