Collaborative for Children with Special Needs
The Collaborative for Children with Special Needs (CCSN) serves as an open forum and virtual community, connecting researchers across the region to foster idea-sharing, collaboration, and the advancement of pediatric research at UTCOMLS.

Mission
Our mission is to develop outstanding research, education, and service programs that support children with special needs, their families, and their communities.
Goals
- To serve as an incubator for research and innovation, fostering collaboration and advancing research at The University of Toledo.
- Establish a structured framework to provide initial grant funding for medical students, pediatric residents, and University of Toledo faculty, supporting basic, clinical, translational, social and societal pediatric research.
- Create a pathway for research funding to support students, pediatric residents, and faculty in producing and publishing impactful projects that address gaps and unmet needs in research related to the health and well-being of these children.
- Offer research and scientific mentorship opportunities for learners, pediatric residents, and faculty in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences.
- The long-term goal of the Collaborative is to attract grant funding for research, education and service through program development for these children.
Membership Requirements:
- Submit to the Collaboration (For electronic list-serve) for children with special needs, IRB submitted research, presented research, and published research.
- Agree for identification as a member of the Collaborative on the Collaborative website (Embedded within the University of Toledo Pediatric departmental website).
- Agree to participate in the yearly research symposium as requested (Present recently published and/or already presented research; Mentor students who wish to present projects and results).

Funding Opportunities/Process:
Intent: CCSN funding opportunities provides a one-time seed and bridge grant support for medical students, Pediatric residents, COMLS department graduate students, and early career COMLS faculty with innovative, scientifically sound, research proposals that foster the improved scientific understanding of health issues impacting children with special needs. Funding is provided through the Edmund Vickroy Collins Endowed Professorship Fund. Funding intent for facilitation of pilot studies or as a bridge opportunity for viable ongoing, high-quality investigations that have a high likelihood for extramural support. Funding investigators agree to become members of the Collaborative.
Awards:
- Two (2) $5,000.00 awards for medical student.
- Two (2) $5,000.00 awards for pediatric resident.
- One (1) $15,000.00 award for COMLS faculty, medical students, Pediatric residents, and COMLS graduate students
Submission:
- Application process:
- Submission deadline - November 1 of each year.
- Submission application- Grant Application (PDF).
- Selection is completed, and awardees notified by December 15th of the year of the application.
- Requirements:
- Submissions must meet all applicable UTCOMLS and affiliates requirements. Requirements include but are not limited to Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval/oversight for applicable human subject research, Institutional Animal Care, and Oversight Committee approval/oversight for applicable animal research, and/or Institutional Biosafety Committee approval/oversight for submissions appliable to IBC oversight.
- Medical student, resident, or graduate student projects must include Faculty Sponsor.
- Provide short quarterly written updates on research and a final update by November 2 of following year. (email to jennifer.lamley@utoledo.edu)

- Other faculty, and/or community members (TBD by Pediatric department chair).
- Pediatric Residency Program Director
- Pediatric Clerkship Director
- Elected representative from Pediatric Club- changes yearly.
(Alternate - Designated for review designated by the chair if committee member research submission is under review).
