Divisions: Critical Care
The Division of Critical Care Medicine provides specialized, life-sustaining care for infants, children, and adolescents with severe or life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Based in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), the division manages complex conditions such as respiratory failure, sepsis, traumatic injuries, and multi-organ dysfunction. Care is highly multidisciplinary, involving close collaboration with surgeons, subspecialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other allied health professionals to deliver rapid, coordinated treatment.
The division also oversees the Pediatric Sedation, Infusion, and Vascular Access Center at ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital, which offers comforting, family‑centered support for children needing sedation, infusions, or specialized vascular access. Our team helps patients through a wide range of procedures, such as imaging studies, lumbar punctures, and PICC placements, while also providing ultrasound‑guided IV access, central line care, and therapies including immunoglobulin and enzyme‑replacement infusions. We also assist with pediatric and neonatal bronchoscopies and coordinate urinary catheter placement for necessary imaging studies.
The division is also integral to medical education, training students and residents in the principles of critical care, resuscitation, and advanced life support. Faculty are actively engaged in scholarship aimed at improving survival, optimizing long-term outcomes, and enhancing the quality and safety of intensive care. Through innovation, teamwork, and family-centered care, the division is dedicated to supporting critically ill children.
