Albert Schweitzer was born in Kaysersberg, a town near Strasbourg in Alsace, Germany (now part of France). Schweitzer has been called the greatest Christian of his time. He based his personal philosophy on a "reverence for life" and on a deep commitment to serve humanity through thought and action.
By the time he was 21 Schweitzer had decided on the course for his life. For nine years he would dedicate himself to the study science, music, and theology. Then he would devote the rest of his life to serving humanity directly. Before he was 30 he was a respected writer on theology an accomplished organist, and an authority on the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Dr. Schweitzer studied medicine from 1905 to 1915 at the University of Strasbourg, Germany .
In 1904 Schweitzer was inspired to become a medical missionary after reading an evangelical paper regarding the needs of medical missions. He also raised money to establish a hospital in French Equatorial Africa. He founded a hospital there in MS. Over the years built a large hospital that served thousands of Africans. Schweitzer used his $35,000 Nobel Prize to expand the hospital and to build a leper colony.

The Albert Schweitzer Institute, Quinnipiac University - Hamden, Connecticut
The Albert Schweitzer Institute was founded in 1984 as the Albert Schweitzer Memorial foundation and affiliated with Quinnipiac University in 2002. This affiliation has allowed the institute to sponsor several programs that not only carry on but invigorate Schweitzer’s humanitarian legacy.
Quinnipiac University’s commitment to international understanding and community service enables the institute to fulfill its vital mission of encouraging young adults to expand their horizons to a global perspective in the areas of humanitarian values, health care, and peace.

William P. Magee, Jr., D.D.S., M.D. is Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Operation Smile, Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Magee, a leading plastic and craniofacial surgeon, founded Operation Smile in 1982 with his wife, Kathleen S. Magee, B.S.N., M.Ed., M and serves as the organization’s Chief Executive Officer: Operation Smile is a private not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization providing reconstructive surgery and related health cant to indigent children and average adults in developing countries and the United States.
Dr. Magee is a lifetime member of Operation Smile’s Board of Directors, He maintains a private practice in Norfolk, Va, and is Co-director of The Institute for Craniofacial and Plastic Surgery located in the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and Chair of the Plastic Surgery Department In addition, he is associate professor of plastic surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Magee also serves on the Board of Directors for talksurgery.com. The Magees reside in Norfolk and have five grown children, all of whom have served on medical missions and are active in volunteer work for Operation Smile.
In addition to leading the organization as CEO, Dr. Magee also helps train international physicians in craniofacial techniques through Operation Smile’s annual Physicians’ Training Program. In 1999, the Magees envisioned and launched World Journey of Hope ‘99, the largest surgical mission in history dedicated to correcting facial deformities among some of tire world’s neediest children. The nine-week mission, the first-ever of its kind, transformed the lives of more than 5 children and young adults in 17 developing countries and in 10 cities across the United States.

Dr Magee was included in the 2002 Consumers’ Guide to Top Doctors from a recent survey conducted by the nonprofit consumer education organization, Consumers’ CHECKBOOK. Dr. Magee was one of 102 members of the Sentara Norfolk General medical staff rated highest by their peers, more than 490 doctors from the American Medical Association’s Norfolk, Virginia mailing list AMA (American Medical Association) members participated in the survey that asked them where they would send their own families for medical care.

Dr. Magee has written numerous articles for scientific journals and has contributed chapters for books.
In addition, Dr. Magee has been the keynote speaker at national conferences, events and ceremonies. In June 2000, he addressed more than 1,200 delegates from 50 countries and regions around the world on “Information Technology for Better Health Care;’ at the World Congress on Information Technology in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1997, he held the Kazanjian Lectureship, an honorary lecture to the entire membership of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in San Francisco. Dr. Magee has delivered several college and medical school commencement addresses and is actively involved in inspirational and motivational speaking in the corporate sector.
He also has made appearances on ‘NBC Nightly News,” “Dateline NBC,” “Leeza’ “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” “Hour of Power;” “48 Hours;’ “CBS Sunday Morning” and CBS’s “Touched by an Angel” The Magees also have been featured in “People Magazine,” “Time,’ “Ladies’ Home Journal,” “Southern Living” “Biography” and numerous other publications.

Kathleen S. Magee, B.S.N., M.Ed., M.S.W, a former nurse and clinical social worker, co-founded Operation Smile in 1982 with her husband, William P. Magee Jr., D.D.S, M.D.
Operation Smile:
Operation Smile is a private, not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization providing reconstructive surgery and related health care to indigent children and young adults in developing countries arid the United States. A dedicated advocate for children around the world, Ms. Magee participates in many of operation Smile’s annual international surgical mission to the developing world and leads the majority of its fact-finding missions.
Ms. Magee serves as the president of Operation Smile on a full-time, volunteer basis and is a life time member of the Board of Directors. She travels overseas extensively to nurture and maintain key corporate, diplomatic and medical partnerships that enable Operation Smile In carry out its surgical missions. She has been instrumental in establishing several Operation Smile international foundations, which handle all of the logistical aspects of the medical missions. The Magees envisioned and launched World Journey of Hope ‘99, the largest surgical mission in history dedicated to correcting facial deformities among sati of the world’s neediest children. The nine-week mission, the first-ever of its kind, transformed the lives of more than 5,300 children and young adults in 17 developing countries and in 10 cities across the United States.
Ms. Magee is committed to bringing about positive change and improved medical care in Operation Smile's mission countries. She vats part of the volunteer medical team that opened the first-ever burn unit in Nablus, West Bank, in December of 1996. She also helped establish a Philippine Scholarship Program to provide indigent children with schooling and meals. In her hometown of Norfolk Va., she has established support groups for trauma victims and craniofacial patients, as well as con meted mental health and play therapy for families and children.
Ms. Magee is deeply involved with Operation Smile's Student Program, which provides the opportunity for students to learn about volunteerism and support Operation Smile’s work by raising funds and awareness. Operation Smile’s commitment to student volunteers began when Ms. Magee’s eldest daughter, Brigette, then 15, traveled on the first Operation Smile mission as a volunteer. Today, Ms. Magee continues to lead students in team-building activities throughout the year and during Operation Smile’s annual International Student Leadership Conference. The Student Program has grown to involve an estimated 5,000 students in more than 250 Student Associations around the world.
