Elective Description / Requirements:
The student is expected to know how to evaluate patients who present with common infectious
disease. Decide upon the appropriate basic diagnostic and therapeutic approach for
each patient evaluated; follow all patients on a daily basis; review the medical literature
on infectious diseases seen on service. The student, by the end of the elective, should
be able to perform and identify organisms on Gram-stain, list the common pathogens
of common infectious diseases, and make informed decisions on therapeutic and diagnostic
interventions. Be familiar with the general microbiology laboratory and how it can
be useful in patient management; know the appropriate means of obtaining cultures
from various sites.
Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks
Educational Course Objectives: After completing the rotation, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an integrated approach to the diagnosis and management of infections in hospitalized patients. EPOs: MK-4, PC-2, PC-3, PC-5, PC-7, PC-8
- Integrate knowledge of major pathogenic organisms with knowledge of antibiotic groups in the selection of appropriate antibiotic regimens. EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, PC-7, PC-8
- Explain the management of common hospital-associated and community associated infectious diseases. EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, PC-7, PC-8
