Elective Description/Requirements:
In the Advanced Neurological Surgery elective, the student will be integrated into the Neurosurgery Service with appropriate responsibility for diagnosis and management of patients. The student will be assigned a specific Neuroscience topic for presentation.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Perform a screening neurologic exam. EPOs: PC-2, PC-3, MK-1 
  2. Recognize signs and symptoms of common lumbar and cervical root syndromes. EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, PC-9, MK-4, MK-7
  3. Evaluate the patient in coma and discuss the differentiated diagnosis of coma. EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, PC-9, MK-4, MK-7
  4. Evaluate the patient with head or spinal cord injury. EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, PC-9, MK-4, MK-7
  5. Appropriate use of imaging, endoscopic, and diagnostic modalities and recognition of abnormalities. EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, PC-9, MK-4, MK-7
  6. Summarize the history and physical exam, differential diagnosis, interpretation of imaging studies and suggested. EPOs: PC-1, PC-2, PC-3, PC-4, MK-7
  7. Review the journal literature pertinent to a selected area and evaluate selected reviews. EPOs: PC-10, PC-8, MK-3, MK-8
  8. Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1, PC-3
  9. Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1, PC-3
  10. Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, IPC-4, IPC-7

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Yrs. 1 & 2, and a passing score on USMLE Step 1, successful completion of The Bridge Course

Special Requirements: Participation in night call is recommended because many cases come in after hours. A call schedule, in compliance with institutional policy #3364-81-04-004-00, “Assigned Education Hours for Medical Students During Clinical Clerkships” will be arranged per individual.
