Elective Description/ Requirements: The student will participate in the field of gynecology oncology by providing care for patients with gynecologic cancer. The student will be integrated into the gynecologic oncology service as a 3rd year elective student on the team and will be involved with outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and surgery. The student will be exposed to all areas of gynecologic oncology: outpatient and inpatient care of patients, oncologic surgery, chemotherapy, pathology, radiology, and radiation oncology.
Length of Clerkship: 4 Weeks
Course Learning Objectives and Links to EPOs:
- Collect independently both focused and comprehensive patient histories from a gynecologic oncology patient. EPOs: PC1
- Perform independently both focused and comprehensive physical examinations for a gynecology oncology patient. EPOs: PC1
- Prepare organized, appropriately focused and accurate oral presentations. EPOs: IPC1, IPC2
- Document a clinical encounter in the electronic health record (e.g., H&P, daily progress note, orders, d/c summary). EPOs: PC1
- Integrate diagnostic and clinical information to formulate a primary and complete differential diagnosis. EPOs: PC6, PC7
- Construct a concise and succinct patient handoff. EPOs: IPC1, IPC2
- Develop a basic management plan with the health care team for a patient on the gynecology oncology service and describe a rationale for the clinical plan. EPOs: PC7, PIC6, PC9, SBP5
- Apply the principles of health systems science in addressing clinical care issues for your patients. EPOs: SBP1, SBP2, SBP3,SBP5, PB1
- Incorporate feedback, self-reflection, and improvement into daily practice. EPOs: PBL1, PBL3
- Demonstrate competency of basic surgical skills. EPOs: PC5
Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.
Instructional Methods:
- Lecture: Weekly didactics with residents/attending including Grand Rounds
- Pathology: Tumor Conference twice monthly
- Intraoperative instruction
- Required readings.
- Clinical experience – participation in inpatient rounds with gynecology oncology attending and team, office care of gynecology oncology patients, gynecology oncology surgeries, tumor board attendance and call coverage.
- Conferences – Grand Rounds, M&M, Journal Club, Tumor Board and Resident Didactic teaching sessions
Evaluation Methods:
- Evaluation will be done by the Gynecologic Oncology attendings, residents or other attendings in all setting and incorporated into the AI Summative Evaluation.
- Completion of logs – Hours
- Mid-clerkship Formative Feedback From (minimum of 1)
Prerequisites: Successful completion of third year required clerkships in either Obstetrics and Gynecology or Surgery; Completion of required readings (see syllabus); and Competency in knot tying and suturing
