Elective Description/Requirements:
This four week elective is a one-to-one basis with an orthopaedic surgeon in Lima. Student is expected to accompany
preceptor on hospital rounds, in the operating room, and in the office. The focus of the experience will be sport
related injuries in addition to general orthopaedics.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Acquire basic orthopaedic operative skills to perform less complex procedures. EPOs: S6 
  2. Demonstrate the ability to participate in surgical procedures respecting sterile technique and universal precautions. EPOs: S6 
  3. Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and imaging studies. EPOs: S1, S3
  4. Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. EPOs: S1, S3, S5, S7 
  5. Summarize the history and physical exam and compose a differential diagnosis and treatment plan. EPOs: S3, S4, S5, S6, K7 
  6. Interpretation of imaging/radiographic studies. EPOs: S7, S8, S9, K5, K7 
  7. Manage a patient pre and post operatively. EPOs: S8, S9, K2 
  8. Prioritize management of therapeutic options. EPOs: S8, S9, S10, S11, K2 
  9. Demonstrate a working knowledge of common orthopaedic surgical problems. EPOs: S7, S9, K1, K4, K7
  10. Demonstrate basic understanding of therapeutic options. EPOs: S8, S9, S10, S11, K2
  11. Suturing procedure techniques. EPOs: S6
  12. Implementing a plan for diagnostic evaluation. EPOs: S7, S8, S9, S11, K7

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Yrs. 1 & 2, and a passing score on USMLE Step 1.
