Elective Description/ Requirements:
The student will be integrated on the vascular surgery service and will be exposed to various conditions associated with vascular disease. Students will work with vascular surgery fellows, residents and attending physicians. The focus will be the development of understanding the pathophysiology of both venous and arterial diseases. Students will spend time in the noninvasive vascular laboratory to understand the techniques and the basics of interpreting noninvasive vascular studies. Students will also round on inpatients in the hospital, see patients in an ambulatory setting in clinic and participate in the operating room.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Demonstrate a surgical history and physical examination focusing on vascular disease. EPOs: PC-1, PC-2, MK-7
  2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the patient’s vascular disease focusing on pertinent pathology and noninvasive vascular laboratory information. EPOs: PC-7, MK-1, MK-4
  3. Describe key issues in managing pre and postoperative patients with vascular disease. EPOs: PC-8, PC-9, PC-10
  4. Interpret diagnostic studies including diagnostic arteriograms and noninvasive vascular laboratory procedures. EPOs: PC-1, PC-2, PC-4, PC1, IPC-1
  5. Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and vascular studies. EPOs:
    PC-1, PC-4, PC-7
  6. Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic imaging studies. EPOs:
    PC-6

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Yrs 1&2, passing USMLE Step 1, completion of Bridge Course.
